7 Commentsi can't stand...

  • when someone answers the phone "this is she" or "this is he". that is not even close to being gramatically correct, and it just sounds dumb! it's like nails on a chalkboard when i hear this.
  • "i'm going to give it 110%!" how can you give something 110%? you can't even give it 101%. you can only give it 100%. period. no more. you can give less, and perhaps you know you'll end up giving less anyways, so you overcompensate for your intended lack of work by overstating what you'll give, but that's just silly.
  • my boss asks me to take him to the airport... in his car. "why don't you just park?" i ask. he says because it will take an extra 10 minutes. so instead you're asking me to waste an hour and a half out of MY day so you can save 10 minutes? i understand you're my boss and all, but that's just insulting.
  • people that argue for the sake of arguing. you tell them the sky is blue, and they insist it's not. i work with someone like that. it can literally drive a person insane.
  • when people overuse the word 'literally'. "i literally fell on the floor laughing" no you didn't. so don't say you literally did when you literally didn't. you're just crying wolf, so when you call me up and say that you're literally bleeding to death, i'm not going to believe you, and then you'll die. but maybe we'd be better off without you, one less person in this world overusing the word 'literally' might be a good thing. and disregard my use of the word 'literally' in the above bullet point. my annoyances are null and void if i am the offender. in which case i wouldn't be referred to as an 'offender', but rather a 'hot chick'.
  • people who put on their websites or myspace pages the phrase "haters go away". why would you feel the need to put that? perhaps because came on your page, saw how self-centered and juvenile you are, with your x-rated self portraits and glitterized graphics, and started 'hatin' on you? people only use that phrase when they deserve it. and another thing, the word 'hater' shouldn't be used by anyone that is over the age of 15.
i guess i'm not feeling so fluffy today.

Taken from the LFC Hotline website:

"This is she" sounds dumb, so don't say it.

my suggestion is just to avoid it altogether.  either say "speaking." or "this is." or "this is sarah."  but don't say the latter if your name isn't sarah, because then you'll just confuse your caller.

The sky is so not blue.  I literally cannot believe you said that.  By the way, could you take me (better known as 'he') to the airport?  Don't be hater just because I give 110%.

Yeah, I caught a lot of flak for my 'No Haters' tag line.  And here I thought it was clever, original, but more to the point, clarified that I myself am not a hater in, nor would I tolerate haters.  So I updated it to 'No Fat Chicks'.

Taken from the Eli Grammar Hotline's website:

Grace: (phone rings) Hello.
Janelle: May I please speak to Grace?
Grace: ????????

Of the following two choices, which do you think Grace should say next, A or B?

A.Yes, this is her or B. Yes, this is she.

If you are like ninety-five percent of native speakers, you chose “A”. “A” sounds right. If you are among the other five percent, who remember what their overly-strict grammar teachers taught them, you know the “correct” answer is “B”. “Her” is for objects. “She” is for subjects.

If we say, “this is her”, we are saying Subject = Object, which is not technically correct. “This is she”, which means, Subject = Subject, is the technically correct choice.

HOWEVER, don't worry if answer “A” sounds better to you. “B” should sound strange. The English language is changing, and the matching rule for pronouns (not for plural or singular, mind you) is dying out and becoming old-fashioned. In a few more centuries, no one at all will follow that rule; and the whole English-speaking world will be saying “This is her” and not feeling one single twinge of guilt at their bad grammar. In the meantime, you now know at least one other person who prefers answer “A” too. It is ME! (And I'm a grammar teacher!)
